With the dust of the Guru’s lotus feet I cleanse the mirror of my mind, and narrate the pure glory of Raghuvir, bestower of the four fruits of life. Knowing this body to be without wisdom, I remember the Son of the Wind. Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove all affliction and impurity.

Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue. Victory to the Lord of monkeys, illuminator of the three worlds. Messenger of Ram, abode of immeasurable strength — known as Anjani’s son and the Wind-god’s child. Great hero, mighty and thunderbolt-limbed — dispeller of evil thought, companion of noble intellect. Golden-hued, splendidly adorned — with earrings in your ears and curly hair.
In your hand shine the thunderbolt and the banner; the sacred munja thread adorns your shoulder. Offspring of Shankar, Kesari’s delight — your radiance and glory are worshipped by the whole world. Learned, virtuous and most clever — ever eager to accomplish Ram’s work. You delight in hearing the Lord’s deeds; Ram, Lakshman and Sita dwell in your heart.

In a subtle form you appeared before Sita; in a fierce form you burned Lanka. Assuming a terrible form you destroyed the demons and fulfilled the work of Ramchandra. Bringing the Sanjivani you revived Lakshman; Shri Raghuvir rejoiced and clasped you to his heart. Raghupati praised you greatly: “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.”
“A thousand mouths sing your glory,” so saying, the Lord of Shri embraced you. Sanaka and the sages, Brahma and the great munis, Narad, Sharada and the serpent-king — Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions — how can poets and scholars fully describe you? You did Sugriva a great favour — uniting him with Ram and restoring his royal throne.

Vibhishan accepted your counsel and became Lord of Lanka — known throughout the world. The sun, thousands of yojanas away — you swallowed it thinking it a sweet fruit. Keeping the Lord’s ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean — no wonder at all. All difficult tasks of the world become easy by your grace.
You are the guardian at Ram’s door; none may enter without your leave. All find happiness in your refuge; with you as protector, none need fear. You alone contain your own splendour; the three worlds tremble at your roar. Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when the name of Mahavir is uttered.

Disease is destroyed and all pain removed by constant remembrance of brave Hanuman. Hanuman frees from distress those who fix mind, deed, speech and meditation upon him. Over all is Ram, the ascetic King — and you accomplish all his works. Whoever brings any heart’s desire to you obtains the boundless fruit of life.
Your glory shines through all four ages — famed as the light of the world. You are the guardian of saints and sages, destroyer of demons, beloved of Ram. Giver of the eight siddhis and nine nidhis — such was the boon Mother Janaki bestowed. The essence of Ram is with you; remain forever the servant of Raghupati.
|| Chaupai ||
Through your worship one attains Ram and forgets the sorrows of birth after birth. At life’s end one goes to Raghuvir’s city, and is known there as a devotee of Hari. Need not fix the mind on other deities — serving Hanuman brings all joy. Distress is cut away and all pain ends for those who remember mighty Hanuman.
Glory, glory, glory to Lord Hanuman — bestow grace as a divine Guru would. Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great bliss. Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains fulfilment — Lord Shiva himself is witness. Tulsidas is forever Hari’s servant — O Lord, make your dwelling in my heart.

O Son of the Wind, remover of distress, embodiment of auspicious form — dwell in my heart with Ram, Lakshman and Sita, O King of the gods.
